Caterina took to Instagram on Monday, April 3, to reveal that the house she lived in with her three children, Lucky, Eliza and Paloma “Pippa” Michaela, was destroyed in a fire.
“A couple of months ago my house burned down. As I was getting my kids ready for bed and finishing bath time, smoke began to seep through the grout around the tub,” she wrote alongside photos of the damage. “When I looked down the hall, a river of thick black smoke had already formed and filled the house.”
Noting that fires happen “quickly,” he explained that the family had “about two minutes” to get out of the house. “We escaped with less than shoes on our feet. But we went out. And for that I am eternally grateful to him, ”he said the private practice alum continued. “Unfortunately, we lost all four of our pets. We’re still sitting with that loss, but we’re lucky to be able to love them at all.”
Caterina went on to thank those who helped her family during this difficult time. “This is a love letter to the amazing people who came forward and the amazing ways they did it. Thanks to the firefighters and investigators (thank you Trey!),” she wrote. “Thanks to my neighbor who responded to our frantic knocking on her door. Thanks to the parents of my children’s school who sent toys and books, my friends at @greysabc and @shondaland who sent clothes and supplies, my sisters who flew in to handle logistics so I could be with my kids. Thanks to my team who made everything easier.”
“What we learned is that the only thing that matters is the people (and beings) that you love,” added the Toronto native. “The only thing that matters is the community. We wouldn’t be here without him and we’re so grateful.”
The post concluded with Caterina noting that she included photos of the family pets as well as the house. “Here are some photos to honor the space we once called home, to say goodbye to the animals that loved us so much, and to celebrate that we have the only thing we really need: each other,” she wrote.
