No slow down. sister wives star maddie brown and husband caleb brush made the difficult decision to amputate her daughter Evie’s foot after she was born with a limb difference. Read on for details about Evie’s diagnosis, amputation and more.
What is the diagnosis of Maddie Brown’s daughter?
“Our beautiful daughter Evie has been diagnosed with FATCO syndrome,” the reality star shared in October 2019, just two months after she was born. “It is a rare medical syndrome in which the bones of the extremities do not fully develop.”
According to the National Institutes of Health website, fibular aplasia, campomelia tibialis, and oligosyndactyly syndrome (FATCO) is a “congenital and genetic malformation syndrome of the limbs.”
What has Maddie Brown said about Evie’s condition?
“This is one of the hardest things Caleb and I have ever been through and the decision to share it is almost as difficult, but after much thought, we realized that it is in the best interest of our daughter and there is a chance that can help others. parents who may be struggling too,” Maddie shared alongside a photo of her young daughter in October 2019.
Maddie went on to say that she and Caleb were informed that Evie might have “some abnormalities” before she was born.
“It was not a complete surprise,” he continued. “We knew something was wrong when we had a routine anatomy ultrasound at 26 weeks and what should have taken 45 minutes ended up taking an agonizing two hours.”
Doctors informed the North Carolina couple that their baby did not have “all ten fingers,” which Maddie said was “better” news than they expected. At that time, Evie was diagnosed with oligodactyly.
However, after Evie’s birth, the couple learned that she was “missing three fingers, one toe, and one fibula”.
“He also had a bowed tibia, a shortened forearm and some fusion in his fingers,” Maddie added. “We were hesitant to publicly share Evie’s condition for fear our young daughter would become the butt of cruel jokes and cyber bullying. With that being said, we felt that not being open would be even worse and would make Evie feel ashamed for something that makes her even more special in our eyes.”
He continued: “From what we’ve been told, with fewer than ten recorded cases of their specific findings, it’s unclear what causes the condition.”
Maddie Brown’s daughter had her foot amputated?
According to the mother of three, who also shares son Axel and daughter Joey with her husband, Evie “is healthy in all other respects, apart from her missing bones.”
“This was not a happy decision, we spent the better part of the last year educating ourselves, talking to doctors, prosthetists, other families and other amputees as we made the decision that we made,” Maddie said in August 2020 about her decision to amputate the Evie’s foot. “Before Evie, I would classify amputees into one category. They amputated you because there was no way to save the limb. I think that goes along with education about the #memberdifference.”
He also revealed that the surgeon gave Evie “some extra mobility in her hand” by cutting the webbing between her fingers.”[Evie] he is home and recovering wonderfully,” she shared.
